IAS & ISTS Annual Conference

The Annual Conference put on by the Iowa Academy of Science and the Iowa Science Teaching Section will be held in Ankeny, Iowa on the DMACC Campus October 7 and 8. 

Beth VanMeeteren, Director of the Center and Sherri Peterson, Program Coordinator will be presenting alongside teacher partners from North Tama County Community School District the following sessions.

Addressing 3 Dimensional STEM Learning Every Day in K3 Classrooms by Vonna Watson and Beth VanMeeteren

1st grade teachers provide students with 3-D science learning on a daily basis resulting in rigorous scientific argumentation on grade level NGSS and rediscovering the joy of teaching and learning. 2:45-3:30 room 214

Discussion Session for Elementary Science Teachers by Brenda Kaufman and Vonna Watson 

 Elementary teachers who effectively transformed their classrooms integrating STEM and Literacy will lead a discussion answering questions and sharing insights for meeting challenges teachers face. 1:30-2:15 Exhibit Hall.

Tinkering with Tops by Sherri Peterson 

 Participants will explore lines of symmetry along an axis and other variables that affect rotational motion such as size, shape, and weight of the top body and its placement on the spindle.

Light and Shadow/ Shadow Play by Beth VanMeeteren 

Students engage in shadow play to learn the properties of shadows


Stem and Literacy in Tandem by Connie Courbat   

Students at North Tama have Stem Rotations while literacy is being taught. Students explore, run tests, build, and make sense of their world. Come learn about activities that enhance NGSS.

Seed Dispersal Investigations by Brenda Kaufmann 

Come and experience seed dispersal investigation! From observational drawings to dispersal testing, experience hands-on what students will be investigating in a center during a seed dispersal unit.
