Homewood Science Center STEM Saturdays

Homewood Science Center STEM Saturdays

We love seeing you and your family at STEM Saturdays, 10 am - 1 pm weekly.

Here’s a look at what’s happening in November and the science behind the fun!

Children on STEM Saturdays

We’re featuring monthly making and engineering challenges inspired by children’s literature. You can read this month’s book, Olivia Forms a Band, in our STEAM Studio--or you can share this video with your children before you visit.

Erikson Institute’s Big Ideas of Early Math are a big deal for young learners. At STEM Saturdays, we offer simple math activities for families to try. In October, we learned about patterns and graphs. This month we’re exploring directional concepts (like over, under, and through) with our Imagination Playground blocks, to develop geometry and measurement skills. Let’s help our students excel in math, starting at a young age.

We’ve ordered Ramps & Pathways for the STEAM Studio. This activity for preK- 2nd grade provides endless possibilities for children to think and create, engage in science and engineering practices, and learn about force and motion.

Children building with ramps

We invite you to register for the Chicago Southland STEM Network online meeting, Tuesday, Nov. 16, 5-6 pm, to hear from Professor Beth Van Meeteren, creator of Ramps & Pathways. She’ll share information about this and other resources from the Iowa Regents’ Center for Early Developmental Education, which she leads.
